There are several ways to obtain your RST depending on your level of experience and previous qualifications.
The pathways are:
- Prior qualifications/skills recognition
- Full assessment
1. Prior qualifications/skills recognition
If you hold a western Australian marine qualification, (not engineering), you are not required to undergo further assessment and the Department will send you an application form. Once completed you will be issued with a RST.
If you hold a marine qualification issued outside of Western Australia you will be required to contact an assessor to verify your qualification. A list of acceptable qualifications can be found on the Departments website at www.dpi.wa.gov.au/imarine/recboating/3136.asp
TL3 & TL5 holders will be required to apply for skills recognition before April 1 st 2007 .
2. Full Assessment
This includes theory and practical assessments as well as additional practice time.
The theory begins with a revision session to clarify questions and help you to pass. If you do not meet the required pass mark, an immediate resit is included.
The practical begins with a short tutorial followed by your own practice time to ensure you meet the assessment standards. This is then followed by the assessment where you have two attempts at each task to pass.
Time: Theory- 7:00pm Thursday nights*
Practical- Weekends, times by arrangement*
Duration: 2 hours.
Price: $130.00
Applicants must have access to a suitable vessel to carry out assessment. To be suitable the vessel must be licensed, seaworthy, have all the required safety equipment on board and be over 6hp or 4.5kw. It is always best to be assessed in your own vessel if possible as that is where you are most experienced and confident!
